WHAT IS SMOCKING?

Smocking is the name given to an embroidery technique that was developed in England in 18th & 19th centuries before elastic was invented. It is used for the purpose of gathering a fabric in such a way that it is able to stretch.

- Smocking Pleater Machine -
Invented in the 1950's, Smocking Pleaters are an easy way to make pleats for smocking. This wonderful machine takes fabric that is fed in from the back and pushes it through grooved rollers onto specially designed needles which threaded with normal thread. Once the fabric is pulled off the needles, it is blocked and sized waiting to be hand - smocked.
